Why I Frequently Update My Website (and Why You Should Too)

Your website should evolve as your business grows.

Recently, I was looking over my own Portfolio page and realized something important. While it featured my web design work well, it barely showed the other services I have offered for years, like brand strategy, graphic design, content development, and social media support. Web design is still an important part of my work, but it’s not the whole picture.

If your website doesn’t reflect the full scope of what you offer, you’re missing an opportunity to show your value, attract the right leads, and grow your brand. That’s why I believe in treating your website like a living, breathing part of your business, not something you launch once and forget.

Why I Reviewed My Own Website

Like many business owners, I’ve evolved and my business needed to evolve with me. I didn’t need to change everything, but I did want my digital presence to reflect the full range of services I provide.

The goal wasn’t just to add more work samples, but to better align my site with the full scope of my services. I wanted visitors to immediately understand my core strengths, not just as a web designer but as a creative partner offering strategy, content, and design.

What a Website Update Can Include:

When I updated my own site, I didn’t start from scratch. Instead I:

  • Reorganized my portfolio into categories that reflect my range of work

  • Updated the copy to align with my current services and expertise

  • Made design tweaks that clarified navigation and user flow

These small updates made a big impact, and helped my site tell a more complete, compelling story.

Signs Your Website Might Be Out of Date

I knew that my site was ready for a refresh because my portfolio wasn’t accurately portraying my work, but how can you be sure it is time for a website redesign?

Here are a few signs it might be time:

  • Your services or offerings have changed, but your site hasn’t caught up

  • Your design looks dated or isn’t mobile-friendly

  • Your messaging no longer reflects your tone, values, or focus

  • Your portfolio or case studies feel outdated or limited

  • SEO is slipping and you’re not ranking like you used to

  • You're attracting the wrong kinds of leads, or none at all

  • You don’t feel proud to send people to it

The Benefits of Regular Website Updates

Updating your website is a smart investment, not a chore. It helps you:

  • Stay relevant and competitive

  • Boost SEO with fresh content and updated structure

  • Increase lead generation and conversions with clearer messaging

  • Build credibility by showcasing recent wins

  • Create a brand you’re proud to stand behind

Small Tweaks That Make a Big Difference

A full rebrand isn’t always necessary. In fact, small, thoughtful updates can go a long way in making sure your site stays accurate, aligned, and effective. For example:

  • Adding new portfolio items, services, or testimonials

  • Adjusting design elements if your branding has changed

  • Refreshing images and formatting

  • Updating copy to match current offerings or voice

  • Checking responsiveness and page load speed

  • Adding a new blog post, lead magnet, or resource

  • Audit your CTA buttons- do they still match your goals?
